Epithalon

One of the shortest peptides in this field, and one of the best known names in ageing research.

PropertyValue
TypePeptide, 4 amino acids
OriginDerived from epithalamin from the pineal gland
Research fieldTelomeres, ageing, sleep rhythm
Research statusPreclinical, some Russian studies
FormFreeze dried powder

What it is

The pineal gland is the small organ that makes melatonin. Epithalon is a short peptide derived from an extract of that gland.

How it works

The literature links it to telomerase, the enzyme that maintains telomeres. Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of DNA that shorten with every cell division.

What the research shows

The best known studies come from Russia and cover both cell culture and long running work. Independent confirmation outside that group is limited, which for a substance with such far reaching claims is an important caveat.

Research status

Preclinical, with a few Russian clinical publications.

Practical

Four amino acids is compact and stable; keeps well as a powder.
