SS-31 (Elamipretide)

An elegant answer to a common problem: being active, but never reaching the right place.

PropertyValue
TypePeptide, 4 amino acids
TargetCardiolipin in the inner membrane
Research fieldMitochondrial function, oxidative stress
Research statusClinically studied through phase 3
FormFreeze dried powder

What it is

Unlike MOTS-c and humanin, SS-31 does not come from the mitochondria but was designed in the lab. It consists of four amino acids in an alternating pattern of charged and water repelling.

How it works

It binds cardiolipin, a fatty substance found only in the inner membrane of mitochondria. It therefore accumulates exactly where energy production happens, with no transport mechanism needed.

What the research shows

Clinical research has run through phase 3, in conditions where mitochondria malfunction. That puts the level of evidence above nearly everything else in this library, although there is no registration.

Research status

Clinically studied through phase 3.

Practical

Short peptide, stable as a powder. Soluble in water.
